Instructions
- Choose a controversial contemporary issue that you would identify as complex or nuanced. Ask an LLM to outline the side of the debate that you are less inclined toward (e.g., “outline pro-life arguments”).
- Note any things the model won’t do (if it has been prevented from giving feedback on this topic), any warning language or caveats that it shares, or any other surprises as you get it to outline the sides of the debate.
- Experiment by prompting the tool:
- to respond to different inputs (e.g., “pro-choice” vs. “pro-abortion”)
- to write in the voice of various public figures (e.g., “in the voice of Oprah”)
- to modify the message for different audiences (e.g., “explained as if describing to a child”)
- Log all your prompts and responses in a word document. Steps 1-3 above should each have three to five iterations.
- Reflection
- Analyze how/what the tool changes with each prompt, and hypothesize why.
- In what ways do you think online media (e.g., news, blogs, etc.) goes through a similar process when writing an article?
- What, if any, implications can you imagine for the field of journalism by having more content generated by LLMs?
- Write an analysis or prepare a presentation with three or four of your biggest findings.
